2 lb navy pea beans
1-1/2 to 2 lb picnic ham
Salt and pepper
2 medium onions
1 tbsp butter

Soak beans in hot water to whiten.
Place ham in 4 qt. hot water in large pot; cover.
Slice and saute onions until transparent.
Drain beans.
Add beans and onions to ham.
Bring to boil.
Reduce heat and simmer for 2-1/2 to 3 hours or until beans are tender.
Remove ham and cut into pieces.
Return to soup.
Serve piping hot.
